Productivity and Sustainability: The Perfect Match

Not all labs are created equal. Why do some research facilities produce more patents? Others have greater throughput given the same space and time. The latest research confirms that productivity in the laboratory is largely dependent upon sustainable design principles.

Whether the lab is for research, testing or teaching, operating at optimal performance is the goal for any lab. The presentation will start with a brief overview of productivity metrics that are translatable to various laboratory types. Numerous sustainable design principles and features that optimize metrics and maximize lab productivity will be presented. Each strategy will cite recent workplace studies and include examples from recent laboratory work. Finally, a case study of a just-completed research facility that incorporates sustainable/productive design features will be discussed.

Biographies:

David Miller, a CRB Science + Technology Leader, brings more than 25 years of experience of architectural programming, project management and a wide range of planning services. With a focus on productivity in laboratories, his science + technology experience includes laboratories for teaching, testing and research for public and private sector clients throughout the United States.

Michelle is a senior Architect that has dedicated her professional life to the creation of spaces for learning, research, exploration and collaboration. Her project experience over the past 20+ years includes a variety of learning and research laboratories throughout the Midwest. Her commitment to design excellence and sustainability have always been the focus of her approach to projects. She is a founding member and served as Vice President of the Heart of America chapter of I2SL.
