In 2006, I2SL entered into an agreement with EPA to be the official nonprofit co-sponsor of the Labs21
Annual Conference and Workshops. I2SL has a renewed agreement with EPA through 2010 to coordinate the conference and workshops. The Labs21 program, co-sponsored by EPA and DOE, is a voluntary partnership program dedicated to improving the environmental performance of U.S. laboratories and focuses on education and training of organizations and professionals in pursuing sustainable laboratory design and construction techniques. The Labs21 conference and workshops provide an opportunity for training and information exchange on the best solutions for creating sustainable laboratories and other high-technology facilities.

SEFA is committed to being a leader in creating laboratory solutions that combine organizational, technological, and environmental systems that respond creatively to strategic business issues. SEFA partnered with I2SL on the Labs21 Annual Conference Technology and Services Fair in 2007 and 2008 and is continuing that partnership in 2009. SEFA also offered students scholarships to attend the conference in 2008.
R&D Magazine provides the latest in research and development for the scientific community. R&D Magazine was instrumental in helping produce and execute the first annual Go Beyond Awards at the Labs21 2008 Annual Conference. In addition, R&D Magazine has agreed to work with I2SL and promote the Labs21 Annual Conference through 2010.
Inspired by the success of the Labs21 Student Design Competition in 2003-2004, I2SL, in partnership with the Joint Institute for Caribbean Marine Studies (JICMS)*, whose partners include DOI, and in collaboration with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), is working to develop and implement an International Sustainable Laboratory Student Design Competition. Students in the competition will develop plans for the proposed Salt River Bay Marine Research and Education Center (MREC) on
*JICMS Partners include Rutgers University, University of North Carolina, Wilmington, University of South Carolina, University of the Virgin Islands, U.S. Department of Interior, U.S. National Park Service

AIA has been the leading professional membership association for licensed architects, emerging professionals, and allied partners since 1857. I2SL and AIA recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly create comprehensive laboratory facility guidelines for planning and design. The guidelines will augment and enhance the 1999 American Institute of Architects Guidelines for Planning and Design of Biomedical Research Laboratories.
I2SL is partnering with the Fraunhofer Institute, a Labs21 Supporter and host of Lab 2020, which is a research project concerned with innovations in the field of pharmaceutical and biotechnological laboratories. In addition to laboratory sustainability, the two organizations are committed to exploring
international collaboration on energy benchmarking and laboratory user satisfaction. The Fraunhofer Institute and I2SL will be discussing these interests as part of a larger Global Sustainable Laboratory Council, a group still in its early stages of development.

I2SL is a member of AASHE, an association of colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada working to create a sustainable future. AASHE was founded in 2006 with a mission to promote sustainability in all sectors of higher education - from governance and operations to curriculum and outreach - through education, communication, research, and professional development.
I2SL is partnering with Ball State University (BSU), whose "Greening the Campus VIII: Embracing Change" Conference overlapped with the Labs21 2009 Annual Conference at the Indiana Convention Center. The Greening the Campus VIII Conference took place September 20 to 22 and was presented by BSU, in partnership with the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).
As part of this partnership, I2SL and BSU/AASHE coordinated parallel evening receptions on Tuesday, September 22, and each organization's exhibit hall was open to registered attendees from both conferences.
