Issue 2 - February 2009 Greetings! It's been a busy month for I2SL as we gear up for spring, with lots of new developments on the horizon. We've recently partnered with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for new Laboratory Facilities Guidelines for Planning and Design, and also are beginning a new sub-metering initiative. Additionally, I2SL has recently become a member of the International Association of Science Parks, a worldwide network connecting Science Park professionals from across the globe and providing services that drive growth and effectiveness for their members. It is my hope that this will only further expand I2SL's mission to spread sustainability in laboratories around the globe. Read on to hear all the latest news from I2SL, including Labs21 Conference and Workshop updates! Sincerely,

All you need is a standard telephone and Internet connection to attend. For more information about the webinar please visit I2SL’s website. Labs21 Workshop at Laboratory Design Conference Don’t forget to register for the Labs21 Workshop: Environmental Performance Critera, which will be held on March 23, 2009, in Rockville, Maryland, in conjunction with R&D Magazine’s Laboratory Design Conference. I2SL’s Spotlight On…Laboratory Research and Technical Staff (LabRATS), Winner of the 2008 Go Beyond Award for an Organization The LabRATS program at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB), co-founded by Allen Doyle and Katie Maynard, helps educate researchers on conserving resources in the workplace. LabRATS has promoted the Labs21 Approach in many capacities and has given presentations throughout the UC campuses that encourage sustainable practices in laboratories. LabRATS has grown into 10 separate initiatives in just two years, one of which provides performance assesments for more than 35 laboratories. Learn more about LabRATS' award and other Go Beyond Award winners.
I2SL Around the IndustryI2SL Launches Its Global Community! With the launch of its Global Community, I2SL aims to create a resource that can help match anyone in the laboratory industry with manufacturers, design teams, product suppliers, and other businesses offering the most cutting-edge sustainable laboratory solutions. Learn more about the Global Community, or become a member! I2SL is currently involved in several initiatives to expand its message of sustainability throughout the laboratory community. Recently, I2SL partnered with AIA to help coordinate the Laboratory Facilities Guidelines for Planning and Design. AIA represents architects from around the country who are key to incorporating sustainable practices into laboratory design. Learn more about AIA and its partnership with I2SL. Additionally, I2SL and the Communities of Practice for Sustainable Facilities of the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers (ISPE) are collaborating with Labs21 to develop a working group to discuss energy sub-metering in laboratories.
The purpose is to review and critique sub-metering equipment and strategies
for their applicability in laboratories and other complex facilities to
collect real-time energy consumption data at system or machine levels. The
working group will aim to identify and develop protocol that allow owners and energy managers to
set annual energy and carbon reduction goals that facility operators and
users can meet together. The group meets regularly and others are
welcome to join by contacting I2SL to express interest. The sub-metering working group will hold an expanded review and discussion of its work at the Labs21 2009 Annual
Conference.
Ask Your Lab QuestionI2SL continues to increase its level of support for the laboratory community. If you have questions geared toward increasing sustainability in your laboratory or high-performance facility, submit them to I2SL and they could be featured in the Sustainable Laboratory Times for consideration by the entire Labs21 community. View answers to last month's question about fume hood sash control. This month's question is from the sub-metering working group: What components or systems have you, or will you, use to sub-meter your laboratory? Components may include the following:
