Issue 11 – January/February 2010 In This Issue:
Greetings! In the last few weeks, two bills began picking up steam in the U.S. House and Senate: the Science Parks Research and Innovative New Technologies Act (H. 4413) and the Building a Stronger America Act (S. 583), respectively. Both bills intend to provide much-needed grants and loans for the development and construction of science and research parks, but they're missing the necessary financial commitments to facilitate energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable growth, or, in other words, the ability to implement the Labs21 Approach. We need your help! As a strong supporter of Labs21, I highly encourage you and your colleagues to do your part in making sustainable research parks a reality by writing to your representative or senator and telling him or her to include Labs21 in H. 4413 and S. 583. We've drafted sample letters for you to use. I also encourage you to read about a new online resource for Carbon Neutral Research Campuses, developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Cornell University, which will help research parks reduce their carbon footprint.

I2SL's Spotlight On...2009 Go Beyond New Construction Project Award Winner—Yale University Yale University's first LEED® Silver-certified building, a 100,000-square-foot chemistry research building, has helped the university save more than 16 billion British thermal units of energy, 225,000 gallons of water, and more than $282,000 annually. This accomplishment was possible in part to the application of the Labs21 Environmental Performance Criteria. Learn more about Yale University's award-winning project. I2SL's E-LibraryBruce M. Haxton, AIA, LEED® Accredited Professional and Fred Meade explore the daunting challenges and unprecedented opportunities that lie ahead for the global community in their article "21st Century Vision: Developing a Global Sustainable Science and Technology Park Strategy and Creating Economic Development Worldwide." This newest addition to our E-Library provides perspective on how we can benefit by using the world’s network of science parks to tackle our toughest global challenges. Ask Your Lab QuestionThis month's question: Would you find value in receiving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Professional Credentialing Maintenance credits for attending I2SL workshops? If this is something that interests you please email I2SL. UC Davis Seeks Input for Morning Roundtable Session Discussion Allen Doyle, a Sustainability Manager at the University of California at Davis, is planning two Morning Roundtable Sessions at the upcoming Labs21 2010 Annual Conference. In advance of the discussion, Mr. Doyle is seeking input from the laboratory community with regard to his discussion topics.
