The National Institutes of Health (NIH), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), is the primary Federal Agency for conducting and supporting medical research. Helping to lead the way toward important medical discoveries that improve people's health and save lives, NIH scientists investigate ways to prevent disease as well as causes, treatments, and cures for common and rare diseases. Just as NIH has helped lead the way in medical research, they have also helped HHS achieve a successful and aggressive energy and water conservation program through many innovative projects and ideas over the past ten plus years.
