Addressing the Construction Industry in the Effort to Create Sustainable Laboratories

Labs21 has historically focused on the architect, engineer, laboratory owner, and facility manager in the life cycle of the sustainable laboratory. An often overlooked key player in development of these high-performance facilities is the construction industry—the organizations and individuals that make the designs a reality. This symposium explored the construction industry's role and process in building laboratories designed and engineered with the ultimate goal of sustainability. Presentations by representatives of major construction firms addressed the challenges associated with design, build, and "construction management at risk" and case studies revealed lessons learned.
