Pilot Operational Emissions Score

Many research institutions and companies have set targets to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from their energy-intensive laboratory facilities. The Labs2Zero Operational Emissions Score allows lab owners, operators, designers, and engineers to compare the GHG emissions from an individual lab building with its peers.

The Operational Emissions Score, currently in a pilot phase, is a 1-100 percentile ranking of a lab building’s location-based emissions, which means it is calculated using emissions factors for the building’s electric grid and all other energy utilities used at the facility, including onsite renewable energy. For example, a score of 75 indicates that the location-based operational emissions performance of that building is better than 75 percent of similar facilities.

Anyone who has entered lab building and energy data in the I2SL Lab Benchmarking Tool (LBT) can access their pilot Operational Emissions  Score for each lab building for free. If you have already entered lab building data in the LBT, simply visit https://lbt.i2sl.org and log in to get the pilot score(s). If not, follow this Quick-Start Guide for instructions on using the LBT and for a list of the minimum data needed to benchmark a lab building in the LBT.

Op Em LBT Summary_05-06-2024.png

The LBT includes a Clean Grid Score that shows the building’s hypothetical emissions score if the building were located on an electricity grid powered with 100 percent renewable energy, to recognize and encourage electrification. The pilot Operational Emissions Score does not yet take into account market-based purchases of renewable energy certificates (RECs), green power, energy attribute certificates (EACs), and green tariffs; however, the LBT allows data entry on purchases of RECs, green power, EACs, or green tariffs for lab buildings now, as I2SL hopes to add a market-based score in the future.
