Cape Cod Community College Takes Top Buildings and Projects Award
As part of its Sustainable Laboratory Awards Program, I2SL recognizes buildings and projects that showcase sustainable design, energy-efficient operations, and greenhouse gas emissions reduction. This year, one project stood out for its whole-building approach to energy efficiency and sustainability, earning the overall Lab Buildings and Projects Award in New Construction: Cape Cod Community College’s Frank & Maureen Wilkens Science & Engineering Center.
European Molecular Biology Laboratory Creates Culture of Sustainability
This October, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) received I2SL's 2024 Outstanding Lab Programs and Initiatives Award for taking a comprehensive approach to achieve lab sustainability, with numerous research groups and scientific service teams at six different locations across Europe.
Labs2Zero Brings New Buildings—and Better Data—to the I2SL Lab Benchmarking Tool
Several new Labs2Zero program tools are now available free of charge to users of the I2SL Lab Benchmarking Tool (LBT), and the LBT peer database of lab building and energy intensity information is growing quickly as a result.
Adaptive Reuse Projects Reduce Embodied Carbon and Capture Recognition
Adaptive reuse of buildings into lab space was on the agenda at the I2SL Annual Conference in St. Louis this year—and on the awards stage as well. These innovative efforts include reuse of a printing plant in St. Louis; two old halls converted to lab space at Carleton College in Minnesota; and at a United Therapeutics facility that reused an old field house in Research Triangle Park (RTP), Noth Carolina.
Improving Lab Energy Efficiency With Snorkels, Sash Closure, and Commissioning
During I2SL’s Annual Conference, one session focused on campus efficiency efforts and appealed to a broad array of lab facility managers, engineers, sustainability staff, and researchers by highlighting three different ways that these diverse groups can work together to save energy: retro-commissioning, snorkel positioning, and shutting the sash on fume hoods when not in use.
